Corporations See Benefits from American Cancer Society Programs

Submitted by Jennifer Bachman, Corporate Relations Specialist, American Cancer Society

The number one health concern among Americans is cancer, and with good reason. Statistics show that 1 in 3 people will get the disease in their lifetime. In 2008, over 70,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Pennsylvania. Two known factors that increase incidences of cancer are poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. These factors also cost your business money by decreasing productivity and morale among workers and increasing health insurance premiums. The American Cancer Society can help make sure your employees get the information and help they need, with two great ways to fight back against cancer in the workplace.

The first is the American Cancer Society’s signature event, Relay For Life. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay For Life is a great way for businesses to participate in the world’s largest nonprofit fundraising activity. Relay boosts morale and team-building skills. It’s a fun-filled day, designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for the programs of your American Cancer Society. Funds raised through Relay For Life enable the American Cancer Society to provide services to cancer patients and their loved ones such as transportation assistance, information, lodging, and emotional support by calling 1.800.ACS.2345 or visiting www.cancer.org. More than three million people in 4,100 communities participate in Relay For Life. There are over 50 Relay For Life events in the Philadelphia area, including the Relay For Life of Philadelphia at Citizen’s Bank Park on June 27th. To find your local event visit www.relayforlife.org.

Another way for your employees to fight back is through advocacy. The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), is the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, and supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.acscan.org.

Through Relay For Life and ACS CAN your employees can take part in important activities that promote healthier lifestyles, improve morale, and will help your company’s bottom line.
